Gastfreundschaft ist ein Tee mit Zucker, ein freier Stuhl, ein Teller Suppe, ein Paar Pantoffeln, ein zweites Stück Kuchen, eine Empfehlung, eine Pflicht, merkwürdig, schmerzlindernd, einschüchternd. Keine Gastfreundschaft ist: ein Tee ohne Zucker.
Derridas Begriff der radikalen Gastfreundschaft ist Ausgangspunkt von THE STRANGER QUESTION. Er meint eine Gastfreundschaft ohne Bedingungen, stärker als die Logik einer Vereinbarung. Die vier Künstler, Weltbürger aus verschiedenen Ländern, schon lange in der Rolle des Fremden zu Hause, zielen dagegen darauf ab, sich anzufremden. Als Displaced Persons suchen sie nicht nach Hilfe, sondern konzentrieren sich auf die Handlungsweise des Fremden. Sie bieten keine Lösungen und suchen den organisierten Dissens. Der Gast ist auch der Feind auf der Türschwelle, der alles in Frage stellt.
THE STRANGER QUESTION verhandelt diesen Abgrund auf körperlich-tänzerischer Ebene intensiv und zupackend. Angesichts derzeitiger Diskussionen über die Grenzen der Gastfreundschaft wird das Machtverhältnis zwischen Gastgeber und Gast zur zentralen Frage. Ist radikale Gastfreundschaft überhaupt wünschenswert?

Hospitality is a tea without sugar, an empty chair, a pair of slippers, a second piece of cake, a recommendation, a duty, awkward, soothing, intimidating. Hospitality is not: a tea without sugar.
Derrida`s term of radical hospitality is the starting point of THE STRANGER QUESTION. It speaks about hospitality with no conditions, stronger than the logic of an agreement. The four artists, citizens of different countries and since long time at home in the role of the stranger, are aiming at alienating themselves from themselves and each other. As Displaced Persons they are not looking for help but concentrate on the methodologies of the Other. They don`t offer solutions and search for the organized dissent. The guest is also the enemy on the threshold who puts everything into question.
THE STRANGER QUESTION deals with this abyss on the level of the body, the home and the nation state. In the face of current discussions on the limits of hospitality the power dynamics between host and guest become a central question. Is radical hospitality desirable at all?
